Course Outline

The nationally accredited Operate a Work Platform (WP) course is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge and skills to operate a boom-type elevating work platform over 11 meters safely in the construction, mining, manufacturing and related industries.

Boom-type elevating work platform means a telescoping device, hinged device, or articulated device, or any combination of these, used to support a platform on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated.

A person performing this work is required to hold a boom-type elevating work platform high-risk work (HRW) licence.

This course can also be completed in combination with the High-Risk Licence Forklift or the EWPA Yellow card course.

Entry Requirements

Basic English language, literacy and numeracy (This is a Workplace Health and Safety requirement as students are assessed against the Qld State WHS standards to be awarded their licence).

  • Physical capabilities for being able to operate a Forklift/EWP/ Order picker safely with the required safety equipment as per the Australian standard.
  • A Unique Student Identifier number (USI)- if you don’t have one go to- usi.gov.au
  • Minimum 18 years of age to complete the end of course closed book WHS Qld written assessment and practical assessment. (Workplace Health and Safety requirement). Please note: you can be 17and 9 months to go on a logbook.
  • Provide three forms of approved identification – click here to view valid documents.
  • Wear closed in shoes.
  • Sun protection is also recommended (hat, long-sleeved shirt and pants).
  • Pass a language, literacy, and numeracy assessment (LLN) if applicable.

Course Details

How long will the training take (Duration)

The High Risk Licence Elevated Work platform (EWP) (WP) course for over 11 metre booms has training and assessment that is competency-based.

The duration of the Forklift course depends on the learners’ previous experience, access to a machine, and time availability. The forklift course can be completed as a full course, a logbook course, or as a previous experience course. Each type, of course, has a different length of course times that are determined by the learner and their experience.

Typically the course lengths are approximately:

  • Full Course: 3 full days. This includes all training, practice, and assessment.
  • Log Book Course: 2x 1/2 Days. One for formal training and the other to complete the WHS assessment after logbook hours have been completed on the job.
  • Previous Experience Course: 2x 1/2 days. After evidence of previous experience has been supplied

How is the Training Delivered ( Delivery Modes)

Training and assessment are delivered both practical and theory-based. The delivery model can be selected by the learner/employer depending on factors such as the learner’s experience and competence, timeframes and availability, supervision, and access to machinery. The type of courses we deliver is logbook courses, full courses, or previous experience courses.

LOGBOOK TRAINING – Designed for those learners whom wish to complete the practical forklift training on the job or at their current employment with a licensed supervisor.

Step 1 – Completion of theory training and machine familiarization. The learner is then placed on a training plan with their supervisor.
Step 2 – Learner completes approx. 30-40hrs of supervised operation by a licensed operator while at work in their workplace.
Step 3 – Learner contacts us to book in to complete a final WHS Queensland closed book theory and practical-based assessment. Once Successful the Learner is issued ‘CAS’ paperwork so that they can apply for their license application online with WHS Queensland. Upon successful completion of the course and full payment, the learner is issued a Statement of attainment.

FULL COURSE TRAINING – Designed for learners who don’t have access to the equipment, a licensed supervisor or require the delivery of practical in a very focused small group environment.

Step 1 – Completion of theory training and machine familiarization Learner is then placed on a training plan with the trainer.
Step 2 – Learner completes concentrated and highly supervised operation practicing skills and operation process as instructed by the trainer in a structured learning environment in a small group.
Step 3 – Learner contacts us to book in to complete a final WHS Queensland closed book theory and practical-based assessment. Once Successful the Learner is issued ‘CAS’ paperwork so that they can apply for their license application online with WHS Queensland.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE COURSE – Designed for those learners who have had previous experience operating a forklift and can supply some evidence of this. Contact us to discuss what evidence you can provide.

Step 1-Completion of theory training, machine familiarization, and informal practical challenge test. The Learner’s previous experience evidence is collected and if suitable are then booked in to complete their WHS Queensland assessment.
Step 2– Learner contacts us to book in to complete a final WHS Queensland closed book theory and practical-based assessment. Once Successful the Learner is issued ‘CAS’ paperwork so that they can apply for their license application online with WHS Queensland.

  • Set up elevating work platform
  • Operate elevating work platform
  • Shut down and secure elevating work platform

You will learn:

  • Apply a working knowledge of OHS & regulatory requirements
  • Basic Knowledge of the Elevating Work Platform (11m+)
  • How to assess and secure equipment and the work area (routine checks, plan work)
  • How to operate the elevating work platform (driving, elevation, protective equipment)
  • Maintenance such as refueling of the EWP

Course Outcome

To complete the course, students must successfully complete all assessments which are aligned with the national unit of competency.

All assessments are completed during the course – no assessment activities need to be completed prior to or post the training course.

Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency.

CERTIFICATION
On successful completion of this course students will be issued with a:

  • Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.
  • Candidate Assessment Summary’ (CAS) which is an Interim High Risk Work Licence which is valid for 60 days.

The CAS will be received via the email supplied on your enrolment which is then valid for 60 days from the date of assessment. Students will use this to apply for their High-Risk Licence through Work Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ).

Please note:

  • There is an additional fee charged by WHSQ to apply for the licence.
  • Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a Risk Work Licence (HRWL).

If in the event you are deemed Unsuccessful, we will work with you to identify the gaps and arrange for you to be re assessment to be booked in.

CERTIFICATION/LICENCE EXPIRY

Your Statement of Attainment does not have an expiry date, however, as the training packages evolve and change over time some employers may require you to be VOC’d to operate on sites.

Your High-Risk Work Licence once applied for and received from WHS Qld currently has a 5-year expiry unless canceled or suspended.

In order to renew your licence, you will receive a renewal notice.

You must keep your contact details up to date with WHS QLD. If you do not renew your licence in the 12month expiry timeline you will become unlicenced and must be reassessed. You must not carry out high-risk work until your licence has been renewed.
