The nationally accredited Haul/Dump truck course is designed for conducting haul truck operations in the resources and infrastructure industries. Haul trucks covered in this course are off-highway trucks and may include: diesel-mechanical/electric. This course is appropriate for those working in mobile plant operator roles, at worksites within:

  • Civil construction
  • Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive industries

Basic verbal and written English communication skills sufficient to read material and understand instruction. Where necessary theory assessment can be answered verbally.

Typically the training and assessment is competency-based. Generally the full course can be completed in a few full days. Please Note-Total time is dependent on competency of each individual.

Training and assessment is both practical and theory based and delivery can be selected by the learner as either log book or full course.

LOG BOOK TRAINING–Designed for those learners whom wish to complete the 40 hours of practical training on the job or at their current employment with a competent supervisor.
Step 1-Completion of theory training and machine familiarization. Learner is then placed on a training plan with their supervisor.
Step 2– Learner completes approx. 40hrs of supervised operation by a competent operator.
Step 3– Learner books and completes a final theory and practical based assessment and is issued a statement of attainment and a trained operator card.

FULL COURSE TRAINING– Designed for learners who don’t have access to the equipment or a competent supervisor.
Step 1-Completion of theory training and machine familiarization Learner is then placed on a training plan with the trainer.
Step 2– Learner completes approx. 40hrs of supervised operation practicing skills and operation process as instructed by the trainer in a structured learning environment in a small group.
Step 3– Learner completes a final theory and practical based assessment and is issued paperwork.

1. Plan and prepare for rigid haul truck operations

1.1 Access, interpret and apply conducting rigid haul truck operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the work activities
1.5 Access, interpret and apply required geological and survey data
1.6 Inspect and prepare work area in coordination with others
1.7 Resolve coordination requirements with others at the site prior to commencing, during and on completions of work activities

2. Operate rigid haul truck

2.1 Isolate vehicle and carry out pre-start checks including a walk around the vehicle and inspection of the body and tyres and report any issues identified
2.2 Enter and exit the vehicle using a three points of contact technique
2.3 Conduct start-up procedures, then start up the vehicle
2.4 Select and modify the operating/drive technique to appropriately meet changing work conditions
2.5 Drive, manoeuvre, conduct and control operations within the vehicle limitations
2.6 Act on or report monitoring systems and alarms
2.7 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety to self, others, plant and equipment
2.8 Conduct park-up and shutdown procedures

3. Load, haul and dump materials

3.1 Position rigid haul truck under loading equipment and load vehicle
3.2 Carry out approved haulage operations
3.3 Carry out approved dumping operations
3.4 Complete load, haul and dump work activity

4. Carry out rigid haul truck post-operational procedures

4.1 Prepare vehicle for maintenance
4.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
4.4 Refuel vehicle
4.5 Return vehicle to service
4.6 Process written maintenance records
