The Cut materials with a hand-held chainsaw course covers how to carry out prepare and cut materials such as timber and polymer materials with a hand-held chainsaw. This course includes preparing for work, cutting materials, maximising volume and quality of recovery material, and basic operator maintenance and checks but is not as comprehensive in the servicing and maintenance procedures as what is covered in the Maintain chainsaws course.
The course involves cutting materials with a hand-held chainsaw in a variety of work settings including construction, saw mill, forest products factory, timber retail yard, or horticultural environment. The skills and knowledge required for competent performance are to be used within the scope of the person’s job and authority.
This course can also be completed in combination with the other Chainsaw courses listed on our site.
Please note: Unlike many of our other courses our chainsaw courses are generally only run on demand so may require minimum numbers in order to be run.
Entry Requirements
- Basic verbal and written English communication skills sufficient to read material and understand instruction.
- A Unique Student Identifier number (USI)- if you don’t have one go to- usi.gov.au
- Provide photo identification.
- Wear closed in shoes.
- Sun protection is also recommended (hat, long-sleeved shirt and pants).
- Pass a language, literacy, and numeracy assessment (LLN) if applicable.
This course is generally only run on demand so may require minimum numbers in order to be run.
Course Details
How long will the training take (Duration)
Typically the training and assessment is competency-based and is a 1-day course.
Please Note-Total time is dependent on the competency and previous experience and skills of each individual.

How is the Training Delivered ( Delivery Modes)
Training and assessment are both practical and theory-based and delivered.
FULL COURSE TRAINING – Practical and theory training based on theoretical concepts and set tasks that need to be completed to maintain a chainsaw. The learner is then given a theory and a practical assessment.
Designed for all types of learners giving them access to the equipment and skills required to be competent in the practical skills and knowledge of working in a confined space in a very focused one-on-one or small group environment.
Step 1 – Completion of theory training and assessment.
Step 2 – Learner completes practical training and assessment.
Step 3 – Upon successful completion of the course and full payment learner is issued a Statement of attainment.

Course Outcome
To complete the course, students must successfully complete all assessments which are aligned with the national unit of competency.
Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment (SOA) issued by Health Security & Education Pty Ltd, RTO number 40907.
Your Statement of Attainment does not have an expiry date, however, as the training packages evolve and change over time some employers may require you to be VOC’d or refresh your SOA to retain your currency.
